Greetings,
Apologies if this is an old problem, but…

When saving a JPEG in version 6 Photoshop – well – it saves it. In version 7 it asks for JPEG compression. What gives?

How do I set Photoshop v7 to just SAVE the JPEG without changing the compression characteristics?

thanx,
phil g

You can’t.

Photoshop opens Jpegs in a PSD workspace and if you go to Save As Jpeg you’re creating a compressed version of the image you were working on, not of the original Jpeg.

When opening a Jpeg, look at the file size on the status bar and you’ll see what I mean.

The best work flow is to immediately Save As a PSD or TIF coming off a Jpeg and then do all your editing. Theat way you’ll not loose any additional quality. Then Save as an uncompressed and Save again as a Jpeg. If you’ve resized for the web or e-mail, use Save For Web instead of Save As. You’ll get a smaller file Jpeg that has the potential to look better.

Photoshop 6 had a bug in that it failed to prompt for the JPEG quality (always saving at the default quality).

Photoshop 7 fixed that bug.

Burton – unfortunately, it was the last used JPEG quality….
