I am trying to restore the attached picture to black writing on white background.

You can see my attempts so far using a `white fill` I have also tried `levels` and `curves` as a new layer but not very succssesful. I am just basic with photoshop so that might be my problem.

As you can see from the picture the fill does take care of a lot of it but then I have the problem of doing individual letters to get it done properly (using brush tool)

Any guidance would be appreciated.
thanks

You can select background color …..go to SELECT —- COLOR RANGE ——— and select colors you want to fill
OR
You can convert everything to grayscale as well (set main colors to b&w and click on gradient map) and and set everything using curves.

Image, Mode, Grayscale.

Image, Adjustments, Levels.

Move the sliders around and see if you can find a happy medium.

I got pretty good results by using levels on the red channel. Let me know if you’d like me to make this into a short tutorial.

OK – I’m doing some forum maintenance work right now, but will see about doing a video in the near future. If you have any problem with the image being made public as part of the tutorial, please let me know.

BTW – I had the use of a stove exactly like that one, only it was under the primus brand. A nifty little gadget that belonged to a friend’s grandfather. It produced a tremendous amount of heat.

That particular image I dont own and was using for practice, if going public then it would be best if I supply one that I own which is for a paraffin iron, Link below

I did this one using:
1. color range (marked green from IRON sign)
2. set green and wihite as the main colors – gradient map – layer as soft light – flatten everything – curves
here is the effect

better source file better effect

Using the pen tool and mask just for the two vertical parts here: http://www.digoliardi.net/tmp.jpg

It’s a quick trick. I’m sure once you get the hang of it, you will make short work of the project.

Here’s a video showing one way to fix the image. It turned out to be an interesting exercise.
