I would like to combine two photographs, or frame a photograph, with the effect of a character in one stepping out of the other, or stepping out of the frame. The effect I want is similar to

The two photographs I want to combine for this effect are a tiger and a moon closeup, with the effect of the tiger "stepping" out of the moon.

I have Googled for hours and can’t find a tutorial to show me how to do this. Perhaps I don’t know what search arguments I need. I am not a rank Photoshop beginner, but I am not experienced enough to do this without a tutorial. Thank you in advance If you can point me to a tutorial, or if it is simple to post, outline the steps required.

Put one photograph (or the frame) on one layer. Put the character on a second layer.

Create a layer mask for the character. The purpose of a layer mask is to tell Photoshop which parts of a layer should be visible and which parts should be concealed.

Elementary. Put each image in a separate layer. Erase the part of the image that should appear ‘under’ an object in the other layer.

How do I do this effect?
