If this is not the correct forum for this question, say so and I will move on.

I would like to combine two photographs, or frame a photograph, with the effect of a character in one stepping out of the other, or stepping out of the frame. The effect I want is similar to

http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/d/a/darveaux/a_wish.jpg.h tml

or

http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/v/f/vflynn/trilliumfairysm all.jpg.html

I have Googled for hours and can’t find a tutorial to show me how to do this. Perhaps I don’t know what search arguments I need. I am not a rank Photoshop beginner, but I am not experienced enough to do this without a tutorial. Thank you in advance If you can point me to a tutorial, or if it is simple to post, outline the steps required.

This is an interesting effect, it’s called drawing! you don’t even need a computer to do it! just some imagination, paper and a box of paints.

I think the post was clear. I specifically said photographs. The two photographs I want to combine for this effect are a tiger and a moon closeup, with the effect of the tiger "stepping" out of the moon. No drawing is involved, and the tools are Photoshop 7.0 and my computer.

There is a book out by Scott Kelby called Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks that explains how to achieve this effect. You can get it online or at major book stores.

Well the two links you posted are drawings and defiantly not photographs! The way the do a similar effect with! photos would be to create two layers There really is not a filter to do everything in PS some times you have to use your imagination and think out of the box sorry no pun intended. Imagine how you would achieve the effect with a piece of paper and a pair of scissors, then apply that thinking to Photoshop. Whilst people can tell you how to acheive specific effects in PS the sort of question you are asking is like "how do I write a book with this pen?" I’m sure if you post links to the two images someone will show you how to do it.

FWIW: I think I’ve seen this tutorial at www.myjanee.com. And you’ll need more than 2 layers.. Specifically the Celtic knot tutorials.
http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/celt/celt.htm
to make the Satyr image =
framed outdoors = layer 1 and layer 3
satyr = layer 2
Then just erase portions that don’t fit the image.
Flatten and publish.
actually I’m thinking 3 layers is a conservative guess. You’d have to do the grass also and it looks like the grass would need 2 layers of it’s own. Then you have 2 more layers 1 for the white background, and the background inside the frame.

I haven’t seen the images you are talking about (nor do I care to), but you may trace the images and apply a Brush outline in Illustrator. That is as close to a drawing as photographs can get.

The good thing is, you can also trace the scanned image of a line drawn with a pen, and use that as a Brush.

To quote Martyn – "Imagine how you would achieve the effect with a piece of paper and a pair of scissors, then apply that thinking to Photoshop." This would be one way. Set the moon as the Background, cutout the tiger and paste it on top then scale & reposition it to where you want. Or you could use layer masks and black out the area around the tiger to show the moon behind. you can then position the tiger ‘stepping out’ from the moon. Once this has been done you can adjust the colour/saturation/brightness of each layer individually. the second method has the advantage of not removing any of the image, just making it transparent (the area around the tiger) so if you do want to add part of the top image back in you can. Try searching on tutorials for ‘layer mask’
