Using Photoshop CS-2 soft proof to compare printers?

ColorVision Spyder 2 Pro adjusted monitor (in date profile).

I have some pictures that are out of gamut when printed. That also shows up under soft proof. Yes, I printed first then soft proofed to find out what went wrong. *blush*

Is downloading ICC profiles for other printers and previewing (soft proof) the pictures with those profiles a valid way to determine which printer can handle the colors best?

If so, it would be a way to "test" a potential new printer without having to buy it.

I’m not sure I would use the soft proof test to evaluate a printer purchase. However, the whole point of soft proofing is to reliably predict what you will eventually get on paper.

Remember also that soft proofing is dependent on many variables: calibrated monitor, printer, ink used, paper used, and the quality of the profile.

I tend to use soft proofing to choose my paper rather than my printer.
