Unwanted copies

I am a new user of photoshop elements 2.0

When I open a folder and work on my pictures, photoshop automatically makes copies in the same folder. I end up with copy 1, copy 2, copy 3 etc.
How can I avoid this?

In the "Save" and "Save As" dialog boxes there are some additional options, one of which is a check box to save the file as a copy. If you have a check mark in the check box, that could be the problem.

Thank you for your answer. This was not the problem. It steadily adds copies.
