two things

click once on your hard drive icon, then Command+i (or File> Get Info)

What are Available and Used numbers?

if you use a secondary disk for scratch, do the same thing…

if one or the other are full, you need to delete some files to make (a lot) more room

+++++++

be sure your data is backed up
do normal hard drive maintenance

Buy an external in internal drive. If that’s a G5 tower I would recommend an internal (Serial ATA) drive. You should be able to buy 250-500 GB for $50-75. If it’s a G5 iMac, then get a Firewire external drive. You should be able to get 500 GB for $100-125.

PS

if you are stuck with an open file, try Edit> Purge

then try again to Save

other than that you will probably lose your unsaved work when you reboot…
