OK, this one has me at a complete standstill……..

I WAS using PS 7, WHICH WORKED FINE….

I upgraded to CS and suddenly I"m having a problem cropping. Here’s the situation… I have a .psd file that is approximately 4.8 MB. Its a 16
bit
file. I’ve done color correction and other basic operations on it,
including
resizing it for the screen by setting it to 72 ppi and 1122X768. NOW I
need to
crop it so its 1024X768.

When I do the crop I get the message:

"Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full."

Which is pure, unadulterated excrement…

First, I only have 1 photo open. Efficiency SAYS I’m at 100%.
Second, I have 4 scratch disks specified. They have respectively, 61GB,
23GB,
17 GB, and 3GB of free space… Yes, GIGABYTES… And NONE of them is
the disk
on which Photoshop is installed.

The system has an AMD 2600+ cpu and 1GB of real memory. And 4GB of
virtual
memory. Running Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.

I have renamed the prefs.psp file and tried it without ANY scratch disks.
I’ve
tried it with everywhere from 1 to 4 scratch disks. I’ve tried different
order
for the disks.

NOTHING MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE. I can’t do a stinkin’ crop on a simple
photograph
with this *&^%$#@! new version.

I can’t find any information on this problem in goggle or any of the
knowledge
bases I’ve found. Has ANYBODY seen this problem? Or is this another one
of
those things where I have to nuke the installation and try again?

I am a neophyte, so feel free to follow someone else’s advice, but. . .

Did you go to Edit > Preferences > Plug-ins and Scratch Disks to verify the scratch disks are recognized as such? I have no experience with versions prior to CS, so I don’t know if this is something new to CS and I don’t know if the upgrade process carries you previous setting over.

I apologize in advance if this is a "Duh!" thing you’ve already looked at.

A very kind person posted this link that will solve your problem at http://www.myjanee.com/ It was first posted in 1996 or so, so the problem is surely not a new one with CS!

Here is the url with the tip.

Two suggestions:
At one time PS scratch disk space had to be contiguous. I dont know if that’s still the case.
Have you tried Edit>Purge>All before cropping?

Well, in this case it was just me engaging in one of those stupid human tricks I sometimes find myself doing…

In 7.0 I’ve frequently cropped to specific sizes. And the crop values have always come up pixels. I never had to specify. So, in CS when I did the same thing I ASSUMED they were pixels……. In reality it wasn’t a tiny px it was a tiny in… Which means I was attempting to crop to 1024 INCHES by 768 INCHES.

Which may have exceeded the size of available scratch disks…

Doh!
