Hi All,

I can’t get Photoshop7 to start up on my PC, it was working fine then suddenly the next time i use it, it loads up as far as "initialising Fonts, initialising…." & closes itself.

I use XP Pro.
I regularly download XP updates.
I’ve deleted all .tmp files from the entire PC
I’ve gone into msconfig & disabled all programmes/services on StartUp & reboot & still it doesn’t work.
I’ve backed up my files/folders, deleted a few gigs of data & i now have 12gb left on a 28gb Hard Drive & still it doesn’t work. I have 512mb ram
Increased Virtual Mem to total paging size for all drives to 5000mb & it still doesn’t work.
However Photoshop5 works fine.

I’ve uninstalled Photoshop7, rebooted & installed it again & after install, it immediately came up with a msg. about Scratch Disk – that i need to use my F Drive as my Scratch Disk instead of my C Drive. I clicked OK but Photoshop just closes itself again, i can’t even get into Preferences to change Scratch Disk settings.

Does anyone know if i can change Scratch Disk settings w/o going into Photoshop itself? what do i do now?

Delete your preferences file? Uninstalling PS does not remove the preferences file. PS5 uses a different preferences file since it is usually installed into a different directory tree.
Isn’t the extension psp? You can delete the preferences file while PS is not running because it will create a new file.
Wasn’t that message just a warning? It might be the result of having the PS scratch file and the pagefile on the same disk. While moving the PS file would improve performance, it is hard to see this condition causing a crash of PS.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply. I did a search for *.psp files & found 3 .psp files but unfortunately these were for Photoshop5. Strange… it did not locate any for Photoshop7.

I started up Photoshop7 again & while it was attempting to load up, i did Shift+Ctrl+Alt & it brought up the Scratch Disk Prefs. window. I tried all combinations using my spare drives F: etc. but Photoshop just shutdown again which leads me to believe that perhaps the Photoshop7 Prefs file is missing or corrupted. But i uninstall & reinstall again & it is still not working. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well, I was wrong. PSP is registered as a Paint Shop Pro file. On my system, the preferences file for PS 7 is located in: C:\Documents & Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop Settings
At least one of the directories is hidden.
Merely deleting this file might not solve your problem because there are numerous registry entries as well.
What I would try is uninstalling Photoshop 7.0. This action should remove the registry entries.
Next, delete the preferences file.
Install Photoshop 7.0 including the 7.0.1 update.
Try again.
If this doesn’t fix the problem, I am out of ideas.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your help. On my system, there’s only a shortcut to PS7 if i look in Documents & Settings\all users\Start menu\Programs\PS7 shortcut. All the PS7 files are located in Programs\Adobe\PS7\ but i can’t see the perference file, what is it’s file extention or full file name? i can then do a search for it. At the moment all i see are .dll files, the PS7 app file, a couple of font files, the windows .reg file for PS7, a readme file & a uninst.isu file & that’s it. I checked folder Properties & it says Attributes-read only & hidden is not selected.

If i can find the PS7 preferences file… i can at least move on, right now i’m stuck!

On my system, the file name is:
C:\Documents & Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop Settings\Adobe Photoshop7.0 Prefs.psp
It should be located there because, as a multi-user system, each user should have specific preferences.
