gradual transparent effect from left to right?

Hello all,
I was wonder if anyone could tell me a technique for creating a gradual transparent effect from left to right? Sort like how a gradient overlay from black to white, except IĀ’m using an image and its fading into transparent.

Simply apply your black to white gradient to a layer mask on the image layer. The image will then fade to transparent allowing the layer beneath to show through.
