I’d like to hear from anyone who’s had experience with 4-color printing on uncoated, cream-colored stock, and whether there’s a way in Photoshop to anticipate the paper color in preparing the image file. Just backing off slightly on the yellow, or is there something more sophisticated.

I do not have strong experience in profiles.

You could probably print a test target on the stock and then profile it digitally or baseline calibrate the monitor and then tweak it to a proof made on the stock.

You can profile the paper, but getting the printer to co-operate with you might be difficult. Even with a custom profile, you’re always going to have a warmer color shift in the highlights due to the transparent nature of the inks and the color of the paper stock. To be honest, we usually just run it and let it go warm, embracing the mood that it gives the piece. If you were after super accurate color, you wouldn’t be printing on this stock to begin with. You can, when preparing files be a little more tolerant of whites going to specular as they’re going to have tone now. It never hurts to ask your printer’s advice.
