I’ve searched for information on this but found nothing, probably because I don’t know the correct terminology. I am working on textures for 3D objects. I want to pull the shading from the original texture and apply just that (no color, nothing else) to a new one. I’m sure there must be a way to this but in all my faffing around I’ve not found it.

I’m using a brand new copy of CS2 with Windows XP.

With photoshop there is always more than one way, with that in mind here is one way: use rectangle marquee tool to select an area of your texture that could be easily made into a grid that would be continuous and go to "Edit" define pattern, name your pattern (texture).
On a layer to which you want overlay the texture go to layer style and use pattern overlay or emboss the layer using the pattern you’ve defined, it will appear in the patterns box under either flyout.
