I upgraded from Photoshop 6.0 to CS2 last year. I am running Win2K, on a 2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, with a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and 1024 Megabytes Installed Memory.

I am taking a course on Photoshop and we just learned how to use the Background Eraser. I brought my assignment to work at home and discovered that the background eraser will not erase anything. I’ve tried all three settings and changing the tolerances. Nothing.

I reloaded the install CD and chose REPAIR as an option, but this has not made a difference in program response.

Suggestions, anyone?

Well, let’s walk through what you’re doing because if Background Eraser weren’t working, believe me, it would have been discussed, to put it mildly.

So, what are you doing, step by step, and how do you know it’s not working?

Things to check – if you’re layer palette indicates that you are on a Background layer, and the background you’re trying to erase is white, and the color swatches under the toolbar show that your background color is white, it’s erasing it, but it’s replacing it with white.

If that’s the case, alt-double click on the layer in the layers palette first to make it a true layer. Then you can erase to transparency instead of to background.
