Sometimes I receive a photo that wont allow me to save as a jpg, only tiff or psd. Why?

Is it 16 bit per channel? Does the file have any alpha channels? Does the file have layers?

That was it! It was 16 bit. I changed it to 8 and bada bing. Thanks!
