Program Freezes When Certain Tools are Used

I have been using the same version of Adobe Photoshop 5.5 for several years now, on a Power Mac G4 (OS 9). After all this time, it seems to have started to malfunction. At first it was just the Marquee Tool… every time I tried to use it, the program would quit or, worse, freeze up the computer. I could manage without it, but recently a similar problem’s developed with the Polygonal Lasso Tool. Is the program somehow degrading over time, or can I "clean it up" somehow? Anyone?

Wow… funny thing, I set the feathering to zero (it had been at five for the lasso and fifty for the marquee), and that seemed to fix it. Go figure. Thanks anyway though.
