PhotoShop CS will not save as jpg

When I try to save a PhotoShop file as a jpg it will not allow me to open the jpg file after, it says it’s not a supported format. I found a way around the problem: I have to actually type in the extension: .jpg, then it will open, but that seems a little silly…any ideas?

I’m getting the same type of a deal with CS2, but with PING files. I open a PING, apply a desaturated layer adjustment, flatten it, save as with a different file name, as either a ping or jpg, and then I cant open it as it’s "not a supported format". It appears in the bridge as an icon, not the photo. Glad PS 7 is still on the machine, but I need the capability to have different versions of the same photo.
