What is the easiest/simplest way to draw a box with a border in Photoshop Elements? Like there would be a white box with a black border, which I could enter test into, over a picture.

Tom, I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to do, but here’s one thought:

1. Create a new layer over your picture (Layer<New Layer<OK)
2. With the new layer active, use the Rectangular marquee tool to draw a
box the size you want.
3. With the marching ants showing, do an Edit<Stroke and specify a certain number of pixels (maybe 10) and the color black; hit OK and you’ll have a transparent black box.
4. Use the Magic Wand tool set for contiguous and click in the center of the box; that should select the transparent middle area.
5. Do an Edit<Fill and choose white as your fill color; that will give you
a white box with a black edge on its own layer.

Probably some easier ways to do this that you’ll see from others…

"What is the easiest/simplest way"

Use the shape tool, select the rectangular shape, draw a rectangular shape on picture.
Make sure the color is set to what you want first (white perhaps). Then…. Click on the text tool (set color of text) and then click in the white box…. and type.

Hi Pete and thanks for your insights but this does not create a border around the box you know like in Pagemaker or Illustrator where you can draw a box with a border and each (box and Border) have a separate color.

Tom, did you try the method Chuck outlined? I think that will give you what you want. You can use his base instructions and change the color of the border or the color of the background within the box. Or, you can just do the box and border without the solid fill. Once you have the box looking the way you want it, you select the Text Tool and start typing, and you can also make the text any color you choose.

If you’re not having success using Chuck’s method, repost and let us know where you’re running into trouble. Somebody will expand on the directions.
