I’m doing a logo with text that needs to have the look like this sign here: http://justinsomnia.org/images/san-francisco-eureka-sign-big .jpg

The little round reflectors, that is. I could certainly make a bunch of little circles, and place each and every one over each letter – but that sure seems tedious. Any thoughts on an easier way, using patterns, or some other technique..? Maybe there’s an Arial Black out there with those kinds of dots? TIA…

That’s exactly what you do. It’s not that tedius; put the circles in a layer, make a loose selection around one of them, hold down Option (PC: ALT) on the keyboard, drag copies of the circle wherever you want them to be.

There’s a much easier way.

First create your text in the normal way.
Then select your pen tool, and in the options at the top of the screen, set it’s properties to ‘path’
Now using the pen tool, draw a line along the middle of all the letters of your text, defining an imaginary like along which you want the dots to appear.
Next open your brushes pallette, and select the option labelled ‘brush tip shapes’.
Define a brush the right size and shape for your dots, and alter the spacing to it appears as a line of dots, not a solid line.
Now with your brush selected, and your foreground colour set the colour you want for your dots, go to your Paths pallette and look at the bottom of it for a button labelled ‘stroke path with brush’. Click on this and your dots will appear.
