Hi NG

I am a fairly newbie when it comes to photoshop, so bear over with me if this is a stupid question :-). But I have been making some drawings on a 800 x 600 pixel size – 600dpi. Now they need to get printed on 148×105 mm – 300dpi – as a postcard.

Now is it somehow possible to get my 800 x 600 drawing converted to postcard size ? As it looks now the drawing get very small !

Yes. There are two ways: one will produce crap results, and one will produce good results.

If you don’t care about quality, just use the Image Size command.

If quality matters: Start from scratch and re-create the image at the proper size and resolution.

Photoshop is not the right tool for this. You can interpolate, but the quality will be poor. Because we are talking drawings here, not photos, there is a perfect solution: Use a package like CorelDRAW, and use the ‘Trace’ function to change your pixel drawing into a vector drawing. A vector can be scaled to any size without loss of quality.

First save a copy of your original image. Go into Image>Image Size, check the Resample box, and change the pixels per inch setting to 300, and type in the new dimensions in mm. If you are using CS2, select the Bicubic Sharper option. Otherwise, finish with Unsharp Mask – with a setting of about radius 2.0, percent 75, and threshold 0. Adjust to make your image somewhat sharper, but don’t overdo it – if your image takes on a metallic look, it means you’ve gone too far.

As others have mentioned, the final image may not be up to the best standards. That is your judgment to make, and you may need to recreate the drawing as Tacit suggests.
