Channels palette question

I’m new to channels. I expected each channel in the Channels palette to be in greyscale when the composite channel is turned off – However they reflect the color channel, Red channel is red/black etc etc. Do I have some option incorrectly set?

Any advice much appreciated

In 7, in prefs, in Display and Cursors, option for "color channels in color". That help?
