Photoshop CS2 crashing

I am running WinXP have 1 G ram and Photoshop crashes and turns off my computer.
I have no idea how to fix it, with the exception of
uninstalling/reinstalling or dumping all of the plugins. I don’t have to be doing anything very intensive when it happens……but as an example, if I doing a cut and paste from one image to another, that will surely do the trick. Any ideas, please?

Before you do a re-install, I’d look at the Win "virtual memory" allocation, as this sounds like a memory problem, though 1GB is enough to run PS with all but the larger images. Next, I’d look into the PS Cache settings, what are they? What % of memory is allocated to PS? Any other programs running? Ctrl- Alt-Del and check for processes running. What else is there? Next, try a re-do of your PS Prefs, by holding down Ctrl-Alt-Shift as soon as you dbl-click on PS. Click on OK to re-set your Prefs. (A backup of the Prefs file(s) is a wise move here.) What is your PS Scratch Disk setting? Do you have more than one physical HDD?

If your HDD allocation to Win is dynamic, try setting the Max allowable (it will be in the Max window) and set this to static. Look closely at the PS Cache & % settings. Drop % down to 50-70% and see if that helps.

Last, maybe a re-install, but I would hope not.

Does it "turn off" your computer or does it cause your computer to reboot, or does it leave you with a blue screen with lots of white writing?

Does this only occur with Photoshop, or with other apps too?

Has it only just started happeneing, and if so, have you recently added / changed anything? (like extra RAM)

Does it do this immediately, or only after the system has been running for a while?

Best guess in the absence of further information is memory fault. If you’ve got more than one stick of RAM installed, try removing 1 at a time and see if the issue continues.

And when you’ve checked each individual module, try the last one in each slot to test if the motherboard has a problem with one of the sockets when running Photoshop.
