layer not editable

today, when Im opening a new picture in photoshopCS2, it does not appear to be editable.

Ive tried making a copy of the layer – still not editable

Ive tried clicking the various layers at the top right – nothing.

all I get is the "glove hand" no matter what tool I have chosen.

there is no lock on the layer

— seems to do this with any picture I open

any ideas?

never mind. I restarted the machine and the program and it works now.

is it a gif file? check the mode (image> mode). change it to rgb 8 bit if it’s not that. (gif will say indexed color mode)
