photoshop is turning my photos into black and white

must be some small setting gone array but anything I paste, or place into PS, turns to B&W?

is there some setting I have switched on or off?

When you say Paste or Place, do you mean perhaps that you are Pasting or Placing into a grayscale document? The solution is obvious.

no, I tried making a new file.. the settings are default to RGB not gray scale — ??

First thing to do: Reset your Preferences back to default by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift whilst starting Photoshop. (More about this in the FAQs)
