Can I upgrade a "bundle" full version 4.01 to the latest 8? Is there problems updating older versions as opposed to full version CDs?

Check the Adobe website as to whether version 4.01 can be upgraded to CS (v.8)

There is no problem updating an older version, as the update is actually the full version and installs into its own separate folder, and you can keep
4.01 on hand if you want. "Upgrade" just means that it’s cheaper, and the
CD will look for an older version or will request the older version’s serial number before installing.

4.01 can be upgraded to CS but you’ll need to contact Adobe on one of
their 800 numbers to get the fix that enables the CS install program to do the update…
