Is it possible to convert .psd files to Illustrator (.ai) format? [I could not find this question/answer on the forum.] If so, what are the exact steps?

thanks,

Ed,

There is no way to vectorize a raster within Photoshop, if that’s what you are asking. You can export paths to Illustrator, but only paths, unstroked and unfilled.

Illustrator CS2 has a Live Trace option that will do a respectable conversion to raster, but it will not look like the original raster image by any stretch of the imaginagtion in most cases.

This question has been asked several times on the Creative Cow Zaxwerks forum, because I have After Effects, and you have to have .ai (Illustrator) files as input to the Zaxwerks plugin (which you get free with AE, but it’s the "minimum" version) in able to do Zaxwerks 3D text in After Effects. However, it hasn’t really been answered definitively, in my opinion, on that forum. They’ve mentioned the export paths method vaguely, but this doesn’t seem to work as input to Zaxwerks.

That was my reason for asking. Looks like I will be forced to either buy Illustrator, or put out around $600+ bucks for the Zaxwerks version that does its own 3d text in after effects.

thanks.
