I know I read a tip somewhere about how to change the color in the dead area which surrounds the live work area in PS. I did a search but must be using the wrong keywords. Anyone remember?

I think someone suggested the paint bucket : )
(never tried this myself)

Yep, use the Paint Bucket tool but Shift + Click to get an active window’s background to change to the foreground color selected in the tool palette.
