Hello!
I don’t know what’s going on. After several successful scans, I now get a large ugly red streaked area in the scan. An unaffected clear area runs down the left side, but I can’t clean up the red.
I’m running a Mac with Panther, scanning from a UMAX Powerlook 180 slide scanner, with Photoshop 7. Thanks!

Terry,

Without any details, it sounds like a hardware failure.

I assume you are using Photoshop 7.0.1. What system, 10.3.4? Scanning software?

What troubleshooting have you undertaken so far?

I’m not familiar with the Umax, but if it has a calibration area, it has to be cleaned.

Todie,

That would have been my first thought if it were a flatbed scanner. The UMAX Powerlook 180 < http://www.pcphotoreview.com/Film,Scanner/Umax,PowerLook,180 /PRD_142427_3126crx.aspx> is not a flatbed scanner.

If it’s new take it back and get the Dimage Dual IV scanner.

From the description it might just be that the object you’re scanning isn’t lying flat on the scanner plate.

It’s a slide scanner.

checked your cables?

Does the red streak look "digital" or like a piece of exposed film?

Dead sensor cells, or dirt, in the scanner?

Check for a tiny fragment of broken-off film lying on the sensor.

Unfortunately, the cost of repairs (if it is not a question of a foreign object inside the scanner) may out-weigh the value of the scanner.
