Once upon a time there was a tutorial online which I can’t currently find. Re-entering the PS waters. 😉

Anyway what I want is the ability to place a person with a new background. However, I want to keep the details of the hair…the fly-away strands. This tutorial I mentioned encorporated the use of the dodge tool. I can’t get the results I want.

Any suggestions or links would greatly be appreciate.

That Kurt Murphy tutorial is a winner – I’ve used channels for selecting before, but never thought of doing levels on both the channel and the inverse – that speeds things up a lot!

Most of the tutorials work on the presumption that the model or the person is in front of a light background. I got sent a picture of my estranged daughter, it’s a school photo and she is sitting in front of a dark curtain. She’s got dark hair and I am toiling to get good definition so that I can try out these ideas / tutorials. Maybe if I post the picture to my webspace someone can give me a pointer.

I’ve put her picture up at http://www.pottishaw.freeserve.co.uk/kirsty.jpg I got sent an A4 inkjet print on Kodak glossy paper. My ex-wifes printer (llooking at the print is not as good as mine).
I scanned it in at the highest resolution I could but the quality is just not there. I want to put my daughter on a light background to match her school photos from her primary years.
Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a method in a nutshell. It should get you what you want. Open file, Select>Color(u)r Range, click on the green background with about a 3×3 setting on the Eyedropper. Select>Smooth with about 4pxl setting. Now you have to do a bit of work. Quick Mask, and paint in the green stripe in the tie, and any spots that are missed in the subject. I’d Save Selection at this point, and work a bit with either the Selection>Feather, or back in QM do a Gaussian Blur. You might also choose to run the Blur Tool along the edges of the subject, including hair. You should be very close now.

I’d keep the green background, and just drag a new "background" into your image. Load Selection (Saved above with some name like "outline") and then Save As Layer Mask. This allows you to adjust the mask to rid yourself of any fringing, without actually changing the image in any way.

Trust me, it takes less time to actually do it, than it does to type, or read, it.

Let me know if any of this doesn’t make sense, or if you get stuck. I can always make the mask for you, but if you do it, it’s a good learning process. If you need, I can FTP it to your site, or maybe just e-mail you the mask. Unless your POP server can handle a big file, I doubt that a PSD w/ the Alpha Channel (mask) will fit into your mailbox, though I have not run the size yet.

THANKS so much for all those links. so many methods! I cannot seem to do the channel method properly, I tried and failed. going to have to go over it again step by step with more time.
The wispy hairs, dark brown on a studio gray background are just a mess. To mushy and diffused around hair wisps.

Thank you for the URLs. I’ve used MaskPro, and found that I could get as good a mask with the Pen Tool, then the old "one-hair brush" in QM. However, I’m always up on learning new tricks for masking of subjects as above. While I do more with leaves and twigs, than with hair, the prinicals are the same, so I’ll check out these tutorials, and probably learn a bunch.

Again, thanks,

The reason I said that is because I put someone in a killfile and found it killed everyone who had part of the same name, so I had to go back and adjust it 🙁
