I got the hair away from the dropped in bg ok, but as you can see, in between strands could be better. What are the tricks others use to achieve a better mask? thanks.

IMHO – it really depends where you want to take the image with your creativity (all IMO subject to my limited experience)

– absolute realistic?
tough, hard work tracing everything out at, say, 200% zoom but once done you can almost do anything to the image

– creative softs?
will the central object (presumably human with flyaway hair style) go into soft focus? If so it can hide a multipe of selection options

– transitioning into another background effect
basically same as above

Linda,

In my opinion, the Corel KnockOut < http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Produ cts/Display&pid=1047022702205> plug-in for Photoshop is the ultimate solution to the problem you pose. You can find some specifics in this review of the earlier standalone KnockOut <http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/corel/l/blknockout01.htm>. I personally use the last standalone version of KnockOut, KnockOut 1.5 <http://www.photoshopcafe.com/knockout.htm>, but it doesn’t have to share resources with Photoshop. But there is also good reason to use the latest plug-in version, KnockOut 2 <http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/software/knockout.htm>.

Deebs is Scots

We don’t know that for sure. Maybe he fled to Scotland to avoid persecution by the Sassenachs 🙂
