Is anything gained by switching an 8-bit image to 16-bit mode? This probably sounds like a dumb question. But I did this with one of my images, and I perceived an increase in quality. But then I thought that maybe I was just imagining things. So I thought I would ask the question.

if the image starts at 8-bit, and you not going to change anything in the image, its futile to do so.

Unless you plan to do major corrections on the image, what the Dark one said.

False perception. Since you are viewing in an 8-bit environment, you are still viewing an 8-bit representation of a 16-bit file.

IMHO it would be benificial in the following situation:
-Convert to 16bit (the image is unchanged in quality)
-Apply a blur (the "extra" space is filled in). -resharpen (sort of reverses the blur, but not the gained space).

Now, I would not do the above, but when aplying a curve to a sky (to make the sky more dramatic) sometimes causes Posterization (banding) to show up. By converting to 16 bit, and then blurring portions (by hand) one can save it.

Of course, this is avoidable by shooting in 16 bit (RAW) space.

Rob,
Very clever idea. IT always amazes me the different techniques people come up with to solve problems in PS. It seems to be limitless what this software can do.

….is also worth doing if you are going resample down – I’ve done this in the case of DEM’s before – we can generate a huge 8bit grayscale dem in some of our GIS software but not 16 bit (a lot bigger than needed) convert to 16bit and then resample down to the size required and now have DEM with the full range of graduations need for a decent detail 3d model…just another use/idea…
