Is it possible to work with animated gif files in PS 7?

Of course, if I open the file directly into the program it wants to save as a simple gif file.

I would like to actually insert a gif file in a background piece.

Yes, however you only see the first frame of the animation, transfer to image ready and you can select the frame you require.

In PS7 you have to open the companion program, ImageReady to see the frames in an animated GIF. You can manipulate the frames there or create your own animated GIF. Photoshop CS2 is the first version of Photoshop proper in which you can create animated GIFs.
