hi,

one of the most powerfull features of photoshop is the layering blending modes.
convined with masks allows you to achieve this kind of effects relatively ease.
I recomend you check out some info ’bout blending modes here: http://www.arraich.com/ref/tool_blend_modes.htm
And masks over there:

For starters, you’ll need to understand the fundamentals behind layers and layer modes before you’ll be able to create such images effectively.

i have been trying to make one with my face on my dog but it looks terrible.

One of the hardest parts about graphics design is finding raster imagery that you can use for what you want to do. Just because you have a photograph on your hard disk doesn’t mean it will be well- suited for a particular project.

Sometimes, if the project warrants it, you might need to seek out a professional photographer (assuming you are not one yourself).

i have just been cutting and pasring and playing with the layer transparency – cant even get close to looking good.

The Photoshop manual has several tutorials and other information on this. Plus, there are also a myriad of tutorials online. —

Doing a task like this requires a great deal of skill in Photoshop.

The various human features were not just copied and pasted on the dog, and you can’t lower the transparency because the dog face will show through. Instead, what you need to learn about is layer masking.

Each individual element from the human face–the eyes, for example–is placed in a layer above the dog’s face. The elements are then masked, using a heavily blurred layer mask. (The Photoshop manual has information about layer masking.) The mask is vitally important to the reality of the composite image, because you make the parts of the image blend together by softening the mask, not by lowering the opacity of the layer.

Deke McClellands Book, "Look and Learn Photoshop" has an example of replacing one persons face with another persons face together with detailed directions. He used a large number of tools, but he gave fairly precise directions for each step.
