just in case you quit following the old grain thread, I found the problem with the crumpled paper look to those trans’.
The problem was not that the trannies were of prints, but rather the anti-newton glass bed of the scanner. When you look at the glass and catch reflected light, you can see that slight haze of the coating on the glass used to reduce newton rings. That slight haze is showing up as that grain that was impossible to get rid of in all those trannies. This was found after a routine cleaning, and thinking of the problem and catching the reflected light on the glass. We scanned an empty bed and found it still produced the "grain" or crumpled paper look to those old trannies.
Wish Ida thought of that earlier, but it’s never been a prob till we had to blow it up so large.
We have a piece of pristine glass we’re going to sub to see if the problem is eliminated with the removal of the anti-newton glass.
