PHOTOSHOP CS & the CTRL KEY… PLEASE HELP!!!

I just got Photoshop CS, but my excitement was cut short by the fact that the CTRL key doesn’t seem to work on the main level of the program. However, it works on editing levels such as LAYER EFFECTS. So, if i moved a slider from, say 78 to 64, the usual CTRL + Z would work. but when editing an image, no CTRL function works… This is really upsetting.
it gets worse… what’s more frustrating is that the CTRL functions seem to work in ImageReady!!! PLEASE HELP!
