Problems With Type

I just received my PS CS and am having problems with the type tool. Whenever I click on the image to add a type text, all I get is a black dot. If I type text in, nothing appears. I made sure I was using the regular type tool and not doing anything like type on a path, etc. Does anyone know what is wrong?
