If you think the envelope of a letter is for the message how on earth would you ever be capable of handling a camera?

What language IS that? I could understand a lot of it, but I’ve never seen it before? Is it a joke?

Afrikaans, isn’t it? There are almost 6 million speakers of Afrikaans in South Africa. Someone who speaks Dutch could probably follow it pretty well. Surely you noticed that the webpage originates in South Africa. I think "Beeld" translates roughly to "image".

You are 100% correct with what you said, Tony.
The ‘durbs.koza’ in my address stands for ‘Durban.co.za’ and, like you said, the Netherlanders and us communicate with no problem at all, on other newsgroups.
The photo was shot here in Kwa Zulu-Natal, the province in which Durban is located.

Pico, I am surprised that you can understand ‘most’ of it. What is you home language?

Frenglish 🙂 And I have seen a lot of Indoeuropean languages over the years but never learned one. Now I will definitely look into Dutch. Fascinating!

Netherlanders are interesting to be around. When they speak Dutch, they sound as if they’ve swallowed something unpleasant and are trying to cough it up. When they switch to English, they have lovely RP accents.

For a sample of the Dutch sound, listen to
http://www.maraisandmiranda.com/images/Goggabbie_sample.mp3 and how Miranda – of Marias and Miranda – sings Johnny Goggabbie’s name.

One time on a job we were shooting with Charlize Theron, we knew she was from SA.
We stayed a week in a remote location no TV or other stuff to do at night so we were drinking and
playing pictionary (a word game) and a word came up for her to do and she said>> I don’t know this word in English
very funny, I said they speak English in SA, I thought she was joking and trying to get an easier word

then she said>>> no really I don’t, my native language is Afrikaans it was hard to believe because she has such command of her American accents then she demonstrated her language and we all laughed
she said she learned it from watching Love Boat re-runs as a child

she also said on that trip that she was going to quit modeling and go for film work
jump 10 years
and she now has an Academy award to show for learning all that American dialect

Charlize Theron was born and grew up in Benoni on the East Rand; this is east of (but part of) Johannesburg, which is the biggest city in Africa.

Contrary to what you said about her accent, I read once about a Film Director who chose her for a specific roll, simply because he loved the Afrikaans accent.

Pictionary – we have a word game called ‘scrabble’. More or less the same, I assume.

pictionary has no board
you get a word and have to draw the clues till people guess it sort of like charades

and Charlize may revert to her natural diction when she chooses but in all appearances on TV in USA and for the entire week we spent she did not have "an accent" to American ears.
She has dropped her Boer accent in daily life in USA, maybe when she goes "home" she picks it up again.
Most of her films she has portrayed Americans.

The way some South Africans speak English almost needs a translator for us Yanks, as do some of the more colorful UK dialects.

I never realized the Dutch and Brits had a war over SA, I just saw some youtube clips and then had to read some history. I guess that part of school I was asleep or not paying attention
The only thing we ever heard about SA was apartheid.

I hope it all turns out better than Zimbabwe for your nation……….

Yes, if you study the history of the Afrikaner nation, you will be shocked by facts coming to light what was done, and still gets done, to this small nation. It started when gold was found where Johannesburg got build, and England send their troops to steal the gold from the small nation; they thought it would be easy like taking candy from a baby.
This is the way Britain did it.

Did you pay attention to (or did they never tell you) how the Yanks forced the Indian Tribes into sanctuaries?
Must I tell you what Australia did to the Aborigines?
But… apartheid made headlines.

Yes black racism is just ugly as apartheid was

Apartheid was ugly and bad but (!) many Indians, Coloreds and even some blacks, express themselves as wishing we could have the apartheid days back’!
Your words ‘the truth is not as black and white as the history texts suggest’ stretch further than you think. I must admit that I was chairman for one of the branches of a political party that defended apartheid.

The coin have 2 sides, remember, and this was a small group of white people trying to keep this country part of the 1st world, which it was. Trying to keep up what was built over the years.
(small group when measured against the growing and growing black nation – 10. 11, 12 kids plus. and men many times have more than one wife – the next president(?), Zuma, who was accused of rape and is convicted of fraud) count five wives in his harem – he married the 5th, very young one, recently)

The can not govern a country. We knew it. We created homelands which they governed on their own, and SA had to keep supporting them financially. Right now, Mbeki is one of the choir leaders in begging the rest of the world to write Africa’s debt off as bad debt, and to simply forget about it.

Africa is the proof that they can not govern, and we did not want to become part of the 3rd world of Africa. No black country in Africa is really financially independent. Kenya was the showcase and now they are murdering each other over there. And nobody can argue against what I say, because the prove is there to be seen.

The way they think is proven by Zimbabwe where even lectured people like judges, still vote for Mugabe.

Our municipality name is ‘eThekwini’. I am sure you would like to know the meaning of it. It refers to the testicles of a bull.
