I’m trying to establish rates for photoshop design work – based in US – midwest area. Design fliers, brochures, ads. Any pointers, advice much appreciated.

You say "Photoshop," then you say "design work." Which do you mean? Photoshop is not a design tool; you don’t do fliers and brochures in Photoshop.

If you do all your design and layout in Photoshop, best not to charge more than $5-7 an hour. On the other hand, if you’re a graphic arts professional and you do image editing in Photoshop, layout in a page layout program such as QuarkXPress or Illustrator, and vector work such as logo design in Illustrator, you can expect to be compensated rather better.

The first place i suggest you look is the Graphic Arts Guild’s "Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines." You can order it online at

http://www.gag.org/pegs/index.php

It will answer these questions, and more.
