ICC color profiles

How can I use ICC. color profiles for new Photoshop pictures, while maintaining the printed appearance of my existing Photoshop pictures?

My existing Photoshop files were color-adjusted without ICC color profiles or color management software.

I'm concerned that if I start using ICC color profiles for new pictures, the colors will be thrown off for my existing Photoshop pictures, and then I'd have to adjust the colors in the old pictures to get them to print with the desirable colors that I've been getting so far.

You can not turn off color management in Photoshop.
So if your untagged pictures are coming out correctly
you are probably using sRGB or another small space for your working space and you are not using PS to its full advantage anyway, when sending clipped images to your printer.

Tagging new files with profiles will do nothing to other files.

As MSD suggests, you may not have any problems.

If you do, select "No Color Management" in Color Settings when printing your old images, and you should be back where you would have been before, with no color management being applied to your images as they are printed. --

Would I need to buy a color management program to use ICC profiles effectively?

I assume that you mean in Photoshop's Color Settings > Profile Setup to leave "Embed Profiles" unchecked and "Assumed Profiles" > RGB set to "None" and "Profile Mismatch Handling" > RGB set to "Ask When Opening".

(I'm using Photoshop 5.5.)

"RGB" is not a colorspace as such. 'sRGB' or 'AdobeRGB' are color spaces.

It's been a while since I used v5.5. The critical thing for printing is to make sure that Photoshop does not automatically convert unprofiled images to your working space (V5.0 did this, and I suspect Adobe removed that behavior as of v5.5), and that no default profile is assumed.

After that, print as usual.
