In Britain, we had countless choices for electric kettles, but not so in the States. We have an all white kitchen, and can’t stomach a 1950’s style chrome tank, in full view on the counter. Alas, Bodum, seemed to be our only choice for a contemporary white electric kettle.

So, we’re on our second large Ibis. The first one lasted about 2-years, before it failed (switch failure as mentioned by others). The second is still going strong after 12-years, but not without extreme intervention.

When the second kettle started to flake, due to intermittent switch failure, I opened it up. There’s a stamped sheet metal conductor inside, which is too thin. This creates a high resistance point, which is prone to overheating. I fixed this by covering the component with a layer of solder. That cured that problem. It seems like an easy fix to make this part thicker, so I would hope this flaw has been resolved by now.

A short while later, the connection at the base plate showed signs of overheating. As this represented a potential fire hazard, I eliminated the base plate altogether by connecting the power cord directly to the kettle itself. This solution mirrors the smaller Ibis version, which by the way, I own and use infrequently at the office (never any problems in 6-years). I suspect the design is not robust enough to handle the abuse seen when attempting to align a full and heavy kettle to the base. Over time, it is likely that the pins bend just enough to create another high resistance joint, and thus cause overheating, which melts the plastic.

Once we fixed those two flaws, the kettle has performed without fail, and we love it. It is fast, and the automatic shutoff feature gives peace of mind. Even after 12-years of heavy use, the kettle appears as good as new.

Bottom line: If you are an infrequent user, and you let it cool down between use, you might be quite happy with this kettle. But if you are a heavy user, don’t expect it to last forever.

this particular model has a defective switch. I know abpout 3 cases when the switch stopped woprking within months of purchase. in this case it happened right away. No good.
The switch started flickering and not functioning properly very soon. Returned for a refund but have not heard from them in weeks!
No refund either!
We bought this kettle to replace an identical Bodum model that we had for 4 1/2 years. After using it 3-4 times a day during that period the contacts finally wore out. We have found the replacement to be very satisfactory.
its better to buy quality
everytime i buy cheaper Ikea ect and this product i regret my purchase worked good for a year but the cheap plastic broke
im going to buy stainless this time…buy quality over price is my new motto or dont buy at all for some reason i think european product = quality but nope, shop around

i do like the shape though considering my limited counter space This lightweight and easy to use kettle will get 35 fluid ounces of water boiling in roughly 4 1/2 minutes. That’s fast, much faster than the average range. If you don’t like waiting around for the kettle to whistle, or you don’t have access to a range yet want or need boiling water, Bodum has the appliance to help.
With its modern Scandinavian design, this large-capacity water kettle is attractive enough to pour water for tea in a conference room full of executives. And, with its affordable price, this kettle works equally well boiling water to dish up bulk ramen noodles for a group of college students. Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic, the Ibis holds a maximum of 57-1/2 fluid ounces of water (about 13 cups). It must be filled to a minimum of 8-1/2 fluid ounces–just enough to cover the heating element–to operate. A floating red water-level indicator on the outside of the Ibis rises as water is added and shows how many cups of liquid it is holding. The detachable kettle locks onto the base unit for heating and can then be removed for pouring or refilling. Also made of polypropelene, the base encases the stainless-steel heating element. The short 22-inch power cord stores beneath the base so the unit can be easily transported. Flipping up the switch below the kettle’s handle turns on the power and illuminates the indicator light on the kettle’s top. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes only 4-1/2 minutes to boil 35 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts off after boiling and has a hinged safety lid to prevent boiling water from spilling and a frosted handle for a secure grip. –Cristina Vaamonde
