Scratch Disk Full In PS CS2

I just put PS CS2 on my laptop today (dell latitude d610 with win xp), and as soon as I started running it I ran into a Scratch Disk Full error... not by cropping or anything big... but just using the pen tool on a 500x500 72ppi file.

I've been using CS4 for the past week or so with no problems, but didn't want to fork out the high-ticket cost to keep it past the trial... especially with the bad comments I've been hearing on it... so decided to go with CS2 as I've used it on another computer of mine and the price was good.

Is it possible I could be getting this error because of old PS files that weren't fully removed? I did the uninstall of CS4 before I downloaded CS2 so ??? I also did install CS2 before but wouldn't allow me to activate it because it was already on another comp.

I also heard it could be because of a lack of memory on the drive I use for the scratch disks, but I have almost 10 gigs free on the drive I'm using as my secondary (c:), not sure about the one I have as primary (startup). I'm using that as primary because it was there as a default, though I'm not sure what it is. And I did try them vice versa as well and still got the error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!

mp: C: would be your primary drive/partition, hencely problem! You just do not have enough space to run the OS/app. You need a second drive, even if it is an external.

How many free space do you have in all your disks? 10 gigs is small...

decided to go with CS2 as I've used it on another computer of mine and the price was good.

Did you buy another copy? Where? Anyway you are allowed two activations on one licence!

So it IS space. How much do you think I need? It can't be too much more as CS4 was running perfectly even just an hour before I removed it and installed CS2, can it? I can probably start throwing stuff on disks to free up some space.

As far as Photoshop preferences is concerned, "startup" and "C" are one and the same. You need to defragment and clean up your C-drive. As the others said, 10 gigs is very little, and PS needs contiguous scratch space.

I would also share John's concern about where you bought the CS2 copy...lots of counterfeit out there.

I would guess that there's some kind of problem with contiguous space. You should run some defragmentation on that hard drive. 10gb may be a small amount of space left for scratch for most people, but certainly not for a 500 pixel square image. I can't think of any reason that the OS and Photoshop would use up all that space for an image that small.

I got it on ebay. I figured since it was through a powerseller it would be real or he would risk losing his powerseller status. I'm contacting adobe today to be sure.

Defrag will not increase the amount of free space. It usually doesn't make the free space contiguous. Thus, if you need more space, you need to clean up the disk or buy a bigger disk.
It will be hard to find a disk that isn't much bigger than 10 GB.
