black n white image with color?

Hi

I have an photo that i want to make into black and white except for one part! i have made an new layer with the part of the photo that i want to keep in color! the only problem is when i want to make the rest of the photo (background layer) greyscale, it tells me i have to flatten the layers! then it makes the whole photo black and white? when reading the book it says the original is always locked.
any idea's?

That's because you are changing the colorspace for the entire *file*, not just the layer. Change the backgound layer to a normal layer by double-clicking on it (this unlocks it), then desaturate it (or use the channel mixer to turn it into a b&w). Place your layer with the color information above it, and voila.

Try this
Create a new layer....change blend to Color. Set foreground to black and paint away what you want to become greyscale. You can use the eraser if you go over lines that you shouldn't have crossed Hope this helps

Another option might be:

1) Save a copy of the image with colored layer in photoshop format to retain the layers.
2) delete the colored layer
3) convert the image to Black & White (flatten if necessary)
4) Convert the new BW image back to color (RGB), this will retain the Black
& White detail of the image and allow you to edit it
5) Save the BW (RGB) image with a NEW file name in photoshop format. (do not
close the image!)
6) Open the original image (with colored layer) and position both images so that they are visible on the screen.
7) Make the image with colored layer the active window by left clicking on the image
8) Click "Layers" Pallette to access the colored layer
9) Left click the colored layer (keeping mouse button down) and drag the
colored layer over to the Black and White image and simply drop it into the picture.
10) The new Black & White image should now have the colored layer added to the "Layers" Pallette - Note: you may need to reposition the colored layer so that it syncs with the BW image.
11) Save again. Now tinker and have fun!

The example I gave you is relatively easy - and especially good if you're not overly experience at tweaking color sliders (Hue/Saturation, Contrast, etc.).

Good Luck!

Not too fancy but dead simple:

With appropriate Selection tools, select the area that you want to remain in color.
Anti-alias checkbox = yes
Feather = 3-6 pixels, you will have to experiment.
These two settings determine the smoothness of the blend between color and B and W.
Selection/Inverse
This flips the selection area from the color area to the B and W area Image/Adjust/Hue-Saturation; Move the saturation slider to Minus 100 Accept

Make a copy of the background layer. Change that layer to grayscale or black and white. Make a mask (click on the second from left icon at bottom). Now with black as the foreground paint over the part that you want to show in color.
