Problem with black and white prints

I am having a problem printing images in black and white. I am using Windows XP, PSCS and an Epson 2200. I change the image in CS as follows:
Image>Mode>Lab Color, then I click on Channels, then click on Lightness, then adjust brightness/contrast, and then I go to Image>Mode>Grayscale and discard other layers. It looks great on the screen, but when I print it, it has either a pink or purple tint to it. I have tried it on 2 different computers and printers but it always has a tint.
Does this sound like a problem with my monitor or my printer? Or is there a better way to convert to black and white? I don't like desaturate - it's too gray. I've tried several different ways and this one works the best.
Thanks for your help.

Lori,

You will only get a true grey from your printer if you set it to print using only black ink.

You can get specialised inks and printer driver for top quality B&W inkjet printing. See:

I think this is a good way to convert to greyscale as it preserves a good tonal range. If you don't want to go to the trouble of setting up with specialised inks, you can get reasonably decent results by reconverting to RBG for printing and then modifying your colour output in your printer driver settings. You would need to make test prints (like a classic darkroom approach). I have found this better than using a color profile (for B&W only) on my Epson 1290.

Another good way to go from colour to black and white without mode converting is to use Russell Brown's (www.russellbrown.com) double HSL method.
