Issue with screen color within PS

Recently I upgraded to a new machine and simultaneously switched up to a bigger monitor (from a 17" Sony Trinitron to 19" NEC Multisync FE 950)... I actually still have to Sony which I only begrudgingly switched from-- I inherited the NEC from my partner after he got a flat one from work (which is, BTW utter crap, LOL). ANYHOW, there's issue with the DISPLAY color and it's JUST IN PHOTOSHOP. I'm using 7.0 BTW... and Windows XP pro SP1 if that's important.

For instance this black and white image (greyscale, 300 dpi) views fine in every other application except Photoshop:

The left is simply the image open in a web browser, the right is in PS7.0... I've checked everything I know to check and, at this point, I've probably changed setting I probably should have left alone. If it helps here's the settings as they are (and as they were when I did the screen shot above:

Any suggestions? TIA for any help.

If you go to View / Proof Setup and check Monitor RGB you'll see things in Photoshop as they appear elsewhere on your computer. It's good to have your monitor set up right. I use the NEC profile for mine with the colour temperature set a little warmer. Photos come back from the lab very true to my screen.
