Purge/All might help.
Are you running Win98/ME?
How much RAM?
If over 256MB do you have a MaxFileCache statement in system.ini?
Mac
I am running win98se
I have 192MB of RAM
Purge/All sounded like a great idea. Alas, it had no effect.
Could this be related to scratch disk usage?
Seth
Yes, could be scratch filling up.
Might be because it doesn’t have enough contiguous space for it also, might try defragging and/or freeing up some HD space.
Since you have less than 256MB RAM, the
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=
statement in system.ini is unlikely to help.

I have wondered if PS 7 has a memory leek. That would cause this phenomenon. Certainly PS 5 LE was awful in this respect.
I had the same problem with Win98 and Photoshop, but oddly it got cured by switching to Win2k . That tells me where the memory leak was ! <G>

You could have a point there. I’m on XP now …
There’s no doubt that Win2k and XP are substantially better OS’s. The problem is that moving to XP generally involves new hardware expenses as well. Win98 SE is the best of the Win 9X varietals, but you have to suffer with its insufficiencies until you can afford more machine .

Since recently moving from Win98 to Win2kPro I get a lot of spoolvc.exe errors in Photoshop.
The print spooler shuts down and then the system tells me I have no printer installed. Manually restarting print the print spooler doesn’t resolve the problem; only a reboot does.
shecky did you upgrade right over win98? that’s a no no and can lead to all kinds of wierdness like you describe. best thing to do is backup, format and reinstall win2k (or xp) clean.

No. Complete reformat of drive and clean install.
Shecky, possibly too little contiguous space on the spool drive ? Old print drivers ? Windows printer drivers as opposed to manufacturer’s latest drivers for the printer ?
😕

Don’t know what that means.

Relatively new Canon i950 printer so I’m assuming the printer drivers are up to date.
Shecky,
If you have a single hard drive , does it have a lot of space and is it frequently defragged ? Scratching here for a reason for the curious behavior of your print driver. (?)
Yes, single hard drive. A great deal of free space. Over 3/4 of the disk unused. Recent complete format and install of OS less than a month ago, so I wouldn’t think fragmentation would be an issue; would it?
Thanks for your interest. It’s getting increasingly annoying, especially with larger Photoshop files. 15 MB and up.
Whose thread is this anyway!? ;+)
Apologies for hijacking your topic.

I have to stick with win98 for hardware reasons. My main high-demand computer use is music recording and editing and I have way too much dough stuffed into things that don’t go well beyond 98se.
I have just over 35GB of free HD space. I’ll try a defrag and see if that helps.
Seth
Seth,
I’m thinking your problem is very common in Win98 boxes, it certainly was for me when I ran that system. Solution is upgrade or do what you’re doing , reboot when necessary , I suspect .
🙂
You’re not using Bitware, are you ?
No. Never heard of it before you posted the link.
" The Spooler service then stops, but can be restarted. While the spooler is stopped, the following error message is generated:
Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. "
I too get this error message. But printer operation is not restored if I start the spooler manually. After the error occurs, the control panel doesn’t even show any printers installed at all.
RE: slow PS 7 in win98 portion of thread
After defrag I have a noticable increase in performance. Now I can process about twice as many files before PS slows to the point that I have to restart it.
Thanks for the suggestions,
Seth
Seth,
You don’t have a lot of ram to work with but I run win98SE with PS7 and 256 MB RAM on a 700 MHz Athalon processor and have never experienced that problem. I have run it on machines with as little as 128 Meg and 150 MHz processor and don’t have that problem – it’s slow, but it doesn’t get slower.
Earlier suggestions pointed to HD issues, and I would agree. If defragging helped, then it’s possible you simply don’t have a whole lot of free HD space. It might also have something to do with the drive interface – IDE or SCSI? Interface on MOBO or a card?
If you don’t have a lot of HD space and if it’s an older machine, I couldn’t say I’d be surprised to hear what you’re reporting.
Peace,
Tony
I’m using an IDE interface which is integrated on the MOBO.
I’ve purchased a SCSI card and HD which I plan to use for my OS and programs, but haven’t gotten up the time + nerve to install it yet.
My main HD partition is 52GB of which 35GB is free.
My processor is a Celeron 1.3GHz
The problem continues, and although it’s an annoyance, I’m managing to live through it.
