I remove the red eye effect on images by painting over them. There must be a better way.

Best way I’ve seen is the method by Deke McClellend in Photoshop User Dec 10, 2002

Starts by doing a selection on the irises. Then opening the Channel Mixer to the Red channel and setting the red to zero and the blue and green to +50 each. I’ve tried it and made this composite picture so you can see in detail how well it works.
