I am using Photoshop 5.5, and suddenly if I take a jpeg of size of about 2.5m and I do a ‘save as’ selecting format as ‘baseline standard’ and ‘high’ for quality, the file that is output is about 750 kb – whereas normally it would be of about the same size as the original file. What could possibly cause this?

You shouldn’t open a JPG, edit it and then save back to jpg. Every time you do more data is discarded, and image quality degraded. How nuch depends on what area of the image has been changed.
