Effects Tutorial

Would someone be familiar with a tutorial that could assist me in creating the greyish region around Kobe Bryant in this image

Ideally, if the tutorial had a start image and had step by step instructions with a finished image, that would really help me in learning this technique.

Thank you.

I've found some great information on this newsgroup, so I hope people don't mind if i offer some suggestions here. It looks as though you could do the orange/grey effect with a gradient. The grey bit looks as though a motion blur effect was use. The more talented PS users here will probably give a more detailed answer...they always have for me.
Good luck.

Put the subject on a layer

Make a duplicate of the layer

Use Motion Blur on the bottom copy of the layer

Thank you for the kind words. I am very new to Photoshop so this was a boost in confidence and an opportunity to learn a technique.

Maybe start with solid orange background
Two layers of Kobe on top
Make a path around top Kobe, load as a selection, inverse, create mask, apply white glow with layer effects
Middle Kobe horiz motion blur of a high value, make a mask, paint out left and right
