It depends on a lot of things. Is it just the texture you want (ie scales) or is it the color as well?

If you want just the texture, there is an option under Bevel and Emboss in the Layer Styles called bevel where you can apply a pattern as a texture. (To make a pattern, make a selection, then Edit > Define Pattern)

If you want kind of a combo of the animal skin and the human skin, carefully cut the human skin out and put on its own layer. Get a chunk of animal skin that covers all the human skin on the layer above it. Group with previous (Layer menu). Now play around with blending modes and opacity. Overlay is probably what you’re looking for.

This produces some great effects. I did something similar to this to make my friend into Gollum:

Check out "Digital Fantasy Painting" by Michael Burn. Pub. by Collins, ISBN 0-00-716003-8

You may also want to check "The Encyclopedia of Fantasy & Science Fiction Art Techniques" by John Grant & Ron Tiner. Pub. Titan Books, ISBN 1-85286-891-0. This one is more aimed at the use of naturtal media (oils, watercolours, inks etc.) but still very useful.

I don’t remember where, it was just the end of a long and exhaustive internet search. (For some reason, gollum pictures are in short supply on the internet). I just posted the picture I used, you can just download it from here: http://www.skvely.com/misc/gollum.jpg

I’d love to see the results when you’re done (or anyone else for that matter).

-Steven

PS – I don’t usually use picture sites (I’m too cheap…).
