I scanned an image as a bitmap and saved it as a .bmp then I changed the mode from bitmap to grayscale, then save and close; when I reopen the file is has changed mode to index. I guess I’m doing something wrong but I don’t know what. Thanks in advance. Photoshop 6.0 PC.

When you change the mode to grayscale, you are adding 253 levels of color to the image, and it can no longer be saved as bitmap (which has 2 levels). The only modes that handle 255 colors (or levels of gray) are grayscale and bitmap. Index can handle grayscale, grayscale cannot handle indexed color, so the program opens in index when it finds 255 levels of gray.
