Can't save a copy...

I use Photoshop 7.01 on Windows 2000 SP3. I have administrator rights. I am not seeing any other anomaly in my PC's operation. I have always been able to do this before. I'm mystified!

Today I opened a layered TIFF image (fairly large--122 Mb), hid some of the layers, and tried to save a flattened copy of the image. I get the following error message, in a box headed "Adobe Photoshop":

"Could not save a copy as "C:\...." because that document is currently open. Save using a different name, or close the document and try again."

I do not have a document anywhere with the name I was trying to save to. I tried different names. I tried saving to different locations. I tried letting Photoshop default the name to the existing filename + copy. The file is housed on my hard drive, and I was not trying to save it to a network location. I cannot think of anything I am doing wrong...or differently...than I do every other day. I have attempted to search the forum, but the words in the error message are so very common to Photoshop operation that I may have missed a relevant posting.

Has anyone else had this experience?

This is a problem reported here from time to time. I experience it myself. Adobe is unable to reproduce the problem (as am I <grin>) since it appears to be sporadic.

The next version of Photoshop was recently announced and I'm hoping that the problem disappears as magically as it appears, but we don't know yet.

In the meantime, do a search in this forum on your error message. You will find several recommendations.

Fascinating. We have a group of 6 PCs, all running Photoshop daily, many with multiple files open, and I have never heard of this happening. I personally have been using Photoshop for at least five years. I did find the other threads. Thanks very much, Tony!

The file saved uneventfully this morning...but I did not open any other files at the same time. I noticed one other user mentioned Norton AntiVirus. It has recently been locally installed on my PC for the first time. Most PCs in our company rely on server-level protection. I wonder whether that could be a clue? I am always a bit suspicious of Norton's products.

I've been using a PC since the mid 80's and while I wouldn't necessarily consider myself an expert, I usually have to ability to troubleshoot and track down a cause-effect situation. This one has eluded me as it also happens with freshly scanned images that have not yet been saved. There doesn't seem to be a common thread in the reports. Happens with XP, 2K, and Win98; happens with or without network.

Norton? Maybe. File handles? <shrug>. After trial and error, I can usually recover without losing anything, so the beads of sweat have dried from my forehead.

Recently I have chaulked it up the the magical mystical world of computing <grin>.

rename psicon.dll. but you'll lose the ps icons in windows explorer.

That didn't stop it for me Dave. <shrug>.

Thanks to both for your help. You've given me some things to try when this arises again (and with 6 users in my group, it's probably when, not if!).

The psicon.dll clue also gave me a better search key, so I found more of the discussions on this topic. (I hate error messages that have nothing unique in them--they are much harder to find! I searched on the entire text of the error, and I still got mostly threads that were unrelated to my problem.)
